COOKING FOR EASTER EVENT A GREAT SUCCESS-
GREEN ISSUES A HIGH PRIORITY
Saturday 17 March saw hundreds of people travel to the Winkleigh
showroom of the South West Woodburning Centre, to see cookers
being demonstrated and speak to experts from Stanley, Aga and
Esse - amongst of the best loved and prestigious names in range
manufacture.
As you opened the doors to the capacious showroom, the delicious
and rich smells cooking met customers. But whilst Pan Fried
Venison with Red Wine, Blackberry and Mint Sauce, Rabbit in
Cider with Dumplings and Easter Marsala Lamb received a lot of
interest at the Cooking For Easter event, it was definitely the
green aspects of stoves which caught the public’s imagination.
Speaking towards the end of Saturday Alan Steers, from Esse
said:
“ Today has been very busy, but we have had the most interest
around the use of solid or wood fuel cookers. There have been
many enquiries about our new Esse Woodfired cooker. It is also
has great green credentials, being built to be super-efficient
and carbon neutral. The extra large firebox takes double sized
logs which burn longer and as less labour intensive to prepare.
Gone are the days of a wheelbarrow of logs to keep your multi
fuel range stoked-up!”
The classic Rayburn brand has been known and loved for many
years, and unsurprisingly representative Robert Crocker found
that many of his enquires concerned just this. He said:
“ We have been really, really busy, with lots of questions from
people who have older Rayburns and want to know about their fuel
efficiency. In the 1960s and 1970s many people were converting
solid fuel cookers to oil. Many of these are still in operation
today, but they typically burn a third more than a purpose built
oil fired Rayburn.
Recognising this, we are currently offering a trade-in on old
models when buying a new Rayburn. As the new ranges are so much
more efficient, this helps people upgrade to greener options.
People also like the fact that they are doing their bit for the
environment as the cast iron in Rayburns is largely recycled and
recyclable”.
Craig Butler from Stanley said:
“ We found that people were very keen on knowing how they could
integrate a range cooker, maybe solid fuel, with existing
heating and cooking systems. They wanted a lot of technical
information, so they could make an informed choice. The
reliability of Stanley's and the large single hot plate continue
to make our cookers a popular choice.”
A husband and wife who attended the Cooking for Easter day said:
“ We have a very old Rayburn which is pretty inefficient. Coming
along to this demonstration has allowed us to speak to a variety
of experts , so we have been able to compare the performance and
price of the great number of range cookers available here.”

The lady laughed:
“ Even my husband, who wasn’t too keen on coming along
initially, has found the day very interesting and it looks as
though we’re now buying a solid fuel cooker!”.
Roger Finnamore, the Wales and South West Master Chef Champion
was demonstrating just how versatile Esse cookers are. He said:
“ Without a doubt, the most popular dish we have cooked for the
event is the Pan Fried Venison with Red Wine Sauce. Most people
tell us that they have tried and disliked venison in the past,
but here today it has been our greatest hit. We cooked both the
venison and the sauce on the top of the range – it’s a quick and
versatile dish, which never fails to impress.”
Visitors to the Cooking For Easter Day agreed as they sampled
the various dishes on offer throughout the day.
With the Easter theme of the day in mind, there was a free draw
to win a large and delicious looking easter egg. The lucky
winner, drawn at random, was Bella White, from Harburton.

COOKS NIGHT OUT
2nd November 2006
The South West Woodburning Centre recently hosted a Cooks Night
Out event, where expert chef from Aga Rayburn David Pengelly
prepared and shared a wide variety of dishes to demonstrate the
versatility of range cookers.
The menu for the evening included more than 14 different items,
including starters, main courses, puddings, cakes, desserts,
party food and some special Christmas themed items. David’s
repertoire included quiche which didn’t require blind baking,
speedy but impressive salmon en croute that would grace any
dinner party and low fat roast potatoes requiring no
pre-boiling. Cooking on three different cookers simultaneously,
David was a mine of useful information about how to use a range
to its full potential.

His tips included:
“ Don’t bother fiddling with making individual mince pies this
Christmas – do a delicious tray bake version which you can put
together in minutes. Use ground hazelnuts in the sweet pastry
and cut into squares once cooked – they won’t hang around for
very long!
Pig in Blankets are a speedy and stylish alternative to sausage
rolls. Roll out the pastry into a large square and cut into 6 cm
squares. Place a cocktail sausage diagonally, and wrap the 2
opposite pastry corners across it. Brush with an egg yolk and
put into the top of the oven.”
During the demonstration David also answered questions about how
to best use all types of Agas and Rayburns. He surprised even
seasoned owners with his tips, such as cooking potatoes and
other root vegetables by bringing them to the boil on the hob,
before draining and putting into the warming oven, with the pan
lid on, for 15 – 20 minutes. David’s ‘Aga egg’ – a sort of
healthy fried egg – caused a stir when it was whisked out from
under the hotplate cover, after being cooked on no more than a
circle of Bake-O-Glide. Served, of course, on Aga toast hot from
the special racks also used on the hob.
An audience of around 40 people from as far a field as
Ilfracombe, came to sample the food, the odd glass of wine and
pick up cookery tips of course!

Guests were given the opportunity to purchase all manner of
cookware at discounted prices, a £30.00 voucher for their next
woodburner or stove purchase and entry to a free draw. Hannah
from Crediton was the lucky winner of the hamper of foodie
goodies.
Rebecca Dayment, Showroom Manager and organiser of the event
said:
“The evening was a great success. Our guests seemed fascinated
by the demonstrations and they also had the opportunity to
browse around the showroom and see well known makes include Aga,
Rayburn, Esse, Stanley and Wamsler cookers in our kitchen
settings.
With Christmas on the horizon, people are thinking about
entertaining and buying those first Christmas presents and I
think the evening gave everyone some food for thought.
I’m sure that we will be looking to hold a similar event in the
future, so watch this space!”.
